ENTICE - Engineering Tribochemistry and Interfaces with a Focus on the Internal Combustion Engine
Tribochemistry and interface research is not itself new, but tribochemistry of real IC engine lubricated systems, especially with the focus on the changing external landscape of technological and legislative environment, has not previously been approached as proposed in ENTICE.
Project ENTICE pursue following science and technology objectives:
- Develop models that explain the function of lubricant additives from the bulk to the macroscale tribological performance, taking into account additive degradation, material physical/chemical/mechanical properties, additive/surface and additive/additive interactions.
- Achive an optimised material/lubricant interaction for low friction and high durability in IC engine components lubricated in boundary and mixed regimes, when using both fresh and aged oils.
- Build up the next generation of in-situ tribology/tribochemistry metrology techniques for chemical characterisation of the buried tribology interface.
- Establish bench tribochemistry study methodologies of relavance to the IC engine for significantly improving the costs related to the design and approval process of novel tribology technologies.
- Develop an extensible, multiscale computational framework incorporating real surfaces, microstructures and dynamic surface modification to understand both friction and fatigue mechanisms.
